NINETEEN

Sutton woke up the next morning in a much better mood, despite the nagging, deep pain in his right thigh. It took him way too long to get out of bed as he finally admitted to himself that he was going to have to take a pain pill for his leg. He didn’t like the way they muddled his head, but some days, he just didn’t have any other choice.

Once he was showered and dressed and otherwise presentable, he hobbled out into the living room, making it as far as the sofa before he had to sit. He wasn’t sure how long he sat there until finally a knock at the door got him in motion again. He answered to find Marisol there. She’d left after they’d made love the night before, saying that he should have the bed to himself after hurting his leg earlier. He hadn’t liked waking up alone, he liked the sensation of her there beside him, but she’d been right. It had been a long time since he’d slept that soundly.

“Hey,” she said, holding up the sacks of food she’d brought. “Ready to eat?”

“Always.” He grinned and stepped aside to let her in. They were having breakfast together before they went back for more cleaning upstairs. As she passed him, the delicious scents of bacon and cheese and eggs wafted around him, and his stomach grumbled. “Is that from the diner down the street?”

“Yep. Best breakfast sandwiches in town.”

“You certainly know the way to a man’s heart.” He sidled around her into the kitchen. “I’ve got water, milk, or juice to drink. Forgot to start coffee, but I’ll put a pot on now.”

While he did that, she came up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist from behind, warm and cuddly and damned near perfect. “How’d you sleep last night?”

“Like the dead,” he said, then chuckled. “Sorry. Bad joke, considering what we’re working on.”

Marisol shrugged then let him go, moving beside him. “Thanks for your help yesterday.”

He snorted. “I’m just sorry I wasn’t able to do more.”

“No. You’re fine. I can handle it.” She watched him with a narrowed gaze as he limped toward the breakfast bar. “Let me know if you need anything today to make things easier.”

Sutton waggled his brows suggestively at her and smiled as her cheeks grew pink. Man, he loved that she blushed so easily. Considering what they’d done in bed together, she shouldn’t be embarrassed by a little innuendo at all. And yet, she was.

His chest grew warmer, filled with an aching yearn that had plagued him more and more lately, especially when Marisol was around. It was almost like he…

No. Stop it.

To prevent himself from forming the word he couldn’t—wouldn’t—say, he turned and grabbed her instead, a new kind of hunger overtaking him. She squealed, but didn’t fight him, and somehow they made it to the sofa with neither of them paying any attention to where they were going, too lost in kisses and caresses.

They finally broke apart when his cell phone buzzed in his pocket with an incoming call.
